I've been trying hard to make some sense of this
But it don't add up, it all comes out wrong
Clearly I've become accustomed to defensiveness
I can't read between the lines of your song.

You were the jester, playing the part of the goon,
Caught with your clothes off
Trying to enter the fool.

All the other in their cocktail dresses and tuxedos
Tipping glasses, sipping wine
Boys and Girls so shiny in the mirrorball
Just to be a part of it working hard to feel fine.

You were the jester, forcing a laugh and a joke,
Center of attention,
You know all this posturing is a grandiose hoax!

I've been trying hard to be perfect so long
I've lost all sense of right and wrong.
Playing oh so strong,
While the walls chip and crumble at the tip of my tongue,
the top of my tongue, a trick of my tongue, oh a lick of my tongue...

I am weary of the masquerade.
I won't play anymore, it's not fun anymore.
There is never enough space between the lines
I've worked so hard to read.

I am the jester, picture perfect facade.
Empty like a photo flash,
Never mind the chumps calling "Ichabod!"
